Effect
Biphosphonate that strengthens bone by inhibiting osteoclast activity. Strengthens bones and teeth and improves nerve and muscles function. |
Uses
Osteoporosis and bone pain associated with conditions such as malignant metastases, multiple myeloma (cancer of plasma cells/WBC) and Paget’s disease. Treat and prevent osteoporosis |
Dose
5-10mg/day. Also available in combination with Vit. D 1500mg tablet (600mg calcium) twice/day |
Side effect
Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, gas and black stools (due to intestinal bleeding). May also irritate the oesophagus causing ulcers and bleeding. Calcium supplements and antacids reduce absorption. Risk of stomach and intestinal side effects may increase when used with aspirin and NSAIDs. Rare. Hypercalcaemia – Nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, abdominal pain, dry mouth and thirst. Can prevent the absorption of certain anti-biotics as it binds to them. Can reduce stomach acidity and then cause rebound effect of increased acidity when calcium carbonate wears off |
