Blocks the absorption of sodium, chloride, and water from the filtered fluid in the kidney tubules, causing an increase in the output of urine (diuresis). Uses
oedema associated with heart failure, cirrhosis, chronic kidney failure, nephritic syndrome and can used in isolation or with other meds. to treat hypertension Hypertension |
Dose
20-80mg 1-2/day. |
Side effect
- Low blood pressure, dehydration and electrolyte depletion (for example, sodium, potassium). Less common side effects include; jaundice, tinnitus, photophobia, rash, pancreatitis, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and dizziness. Competes with aspirin for elimination in urine in the kidneys, therefore use with aspirin can lean to aspirin toxicity. Postural hypotension, hyponatraemia (electrolyte disturbance), hypokaleamia (low blood potassium), hypercalcaemia (elevated blood calcium), gout, impaired glucose tolerance and impotence. |
